Artist's Statement
I am a storyteller who enjoys revealing the hidden. We all have our outward stories of who we are, how we make our living, what we wear, how we want to be perceived -- but what truly interests me are the stories we normally choose not to tell. I focus almost exclusively on three-dimensional portraits, with canvas holes often cut into the head or heart, laying bare what hides beneath. I pursue the juxtaposition of painted Renaissance portraiture and the surrealism of the 'real' object within the painting, using portraiture to show the inner life via the symbolism of a simple, unrelated object. Objects such as butterflies, broken clocks, or frog skeletons dangle provocatively in shadowy recesses. Live and taxidermied birds are often seated in cages within the pieces, describing trapped emotions. Layering gouache paint on large canvases incorporating wood, plaster, text, and 3-D objects, I give my view of the human condition.
