M: You recently sold a design to Calvin Klein. Tell us about that.

I: My work was taken by my tutors to a trade show in Paris in both October of last year and March of this year. Both times the buyers from Calvin Klein were there and were interested in my work. The first piece I sold was a dimpled rubber with wire pins inserted in it. I was very surprised that this particular piece would intrigue such a design house as KC. It was not a practical garment fabric at all and I expect it will be used as a starting point to inspire further development. The second piece was a laminated rubber with wire forms trapped within. I am told that this will be translated directly to kid leather and used for accessories such as handbags and shoes. It was very exciting for me as a student and designer to sell to such a mainstream fashion house.....and very surprising that KC should be interested and inspired by latex. It was wonderful to have my work validated in such a way and certainly helped to spur me on with my development, knowing that there is a mainstream market for my designs!
